GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The school bell hasn't rung yet, but some are already getting ready for class - so they can train to become school bus drivers.

And right now the largest district in the state is looking to put good drivers behind the wheel before school starts. But they say it's been tough with a recent shortage of drivers.

Officials with Greenville County Schools said they're posting signs and getting the word out as they try to attract qualified candidates.

"I think as the economy picked up, we had some competition for jobs," said Lynn Gibbs, the Executive Director of Human Resources for the district. "And the bus driver jobs are sometimes things people don't think about."

The district released a new ad in hopes of attracting qualified drivers.

"We have about 40 openings for bus drivers and about 20 openings for aides," said Gibbs. "If we don't meet the numbers that means some of our other drivers will be doubling up when school starts."

One Upstate mother whose children ride the bus said she hopes the district finds more drivers and appreciates what they do for students.

"To have qualified people that just makes my day to know my children are safe," said Dawn Laboissonniere.

Greenville County Schools have more information on applying for open bus driver positions on their website. Some qualifications include 18 years of age or older and an excellent driving record.
