PENDLETON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews are working to repair and clean up a sewage spill that has overflowed into a Pendleton creek Tuesday night following heavy rains.

The creek is located behind 328 Major Street. Pendleton Public Works director Doris Wilson said too much water has leaked and pumps are running at full capacity to remove the sewage from the water.

The sewage flowed into a branch of Millwee Creek, where it will flow into Three and Twenty Creek and then into Lake Hartwell.

Officials urge residents to stay out of the creek until water tests show everything is OK. It is being tested and the area is being cleaned.

Wilson said everything appears to be fine as of Wednesday morning, but about 10,000 gallons flowed into the creek during the leak.
