STARR, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Anderson man whose body was found near Hartwell Dam on Wednesday died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Anderson County Coroner's Office.

The body was found about 2 p.m. in a field near the intersection of Big Water Road and Highway 29.

Deputies said they were following up on a lead in a case when the body was found.

The Coroner's Office said that the body was identified as 52-year-old Chandrakant "CJ" Patel because of objects that were found near the scene.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown told said Patel's body was found 500 yards down a dirt road in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Deputies said Patel was last seen at 6 p.m. July 1 at his home on Lookover Drive. They said his car was found abandoned July 3 on Wooten Road in Fairplay.

On Monday, deputies said their investigation led them to a home on Jerry Drive in Homeland Park. They said surveillance video from the home prompted them to arrest 22-year-old Kyndra Howell, 29-year-old Jeremiah Johnson and 17-year-old Zachary Gantt in connection with Patel's disappearance.

Cowan said he's not releasing the cause of death or what possibly led to the death of Patel.  An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Chad McBride with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said no additional charges will be filed until after the autopsy is finished and the cause of death is determined.

On Thursday, McCown said that Patel's death was ruled a homicide. He said it appears that Patel may have been killed within 24 hours of his kidnapping.
