Michael Culbreth (Spartanburg Co. Detention Center)
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Spartanburg teenager has been arrested, charged with trying to recruit another teen into a gang.
Michael Culbreth, 18, was charged with gang solicitation first offense and gang solicitation of someone younger than 18. Spartanburg police said he met and befriended a 15-year-old boy at the Spartanburg library.
Over the course of two to three weeks, police said Culbreth initiated more contact before finally offering the boy the chance to join his gang, the 187 Hoover Street Crips.
The younger boy said no, and police said the teen was then threatened.
Police said Culbreth allegedly said he'd "smoke" the boy for declining his invitation. The boy's father eventually got involved and called police.
The report from the Spartanburg Public Safety Department said the boy feared for his life after the threat was made. Culbreth remains in the Spartanburg County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
