SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters said they will investigate the cause of a suspicious fire after an abandoned building was destroyed Thursday morning.

The structure, located on Whitney Road, caught fire about 3 a.m. The Whitney Fire Department Fire Marshal said they found the fire suspicious.

The marshal said they had received reports someone had been living inside the abandoned structure prior to the blaze.

Firefighters from three local departments were able to extinguish the flames that had reached 50 feet high and engulfed the majority of the home at one point.

FOX Carolina crews at the scene said there was a commercial property for sale sign in the building's front yard.

There is no word yet from firefighters of what sparked the blaze.
