Anthony Carpenter (Greenville Co. Sheriff's Office)
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The Greenville County Sheriff's Department is looking for Anthony Carpenter of Belton because they said he has conned several people out of cash in the past two years.
Investigators said he's scammed at least four people, and made off with more than $12,000 worth of items and money.
When FOX Carolina checked the last known address of Carpenter, it was in a quiet Belton neighborhood.
Carpenter is married and his wife didn't want to speak with FOX Carolina on camera. She had no idea what charges her husband faced until we showed her the warrants.
She said he's been gone since she asked him to leave in April 2011. She said she has no answers on where he could be, authorities said they don't have any leads either.
"At this time, we don't know if he's still in the Upstate or if he's gone to another state," said Jonathan Smith with the Greenville County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators said Carpenter wrote checks worth more than $12,000 from a closed Palmetto Bank account to two businesses as the owner/operator of Superior Meats and Seafood.
"He wrote checks to the company to make purchases for appliances and meat products, after they had tried to deposit the checks they returned on a closed account," said Smith.
Deputies said Carpenter then started conning people online by advertising vehicles for sale on a website. When at least two people attempted to purchase a vehicle from him, detectives said he took their money for a down payment and never turned over the vehicle.
We're told his victims didn't see the scam coming.
"From what we've been told he comes off as very friendly and willing to help them out in anyway he can," said Smith. "He'll do anything for them, he is overly nice and earns their trust."
The sheriff's office does not believe Carpenter is dangerous, but they ask that if people see him, to report it right away.
Carpenter currently has outstanding warrants Obtaining Property Under False Pretenses, Computer Crime Act, and Breach of Trust with Fraudulent Intent. Additional charges are pending against Carpenter.
Anyone with information about Carpenter's whereabouts are asked to call 864-271-5210, or 23-CRIME to remain anonymous.
