SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said a man accused of stealing beer from a convenience store resisted arrest, hitting a deputy's dog with a beer during the struggle.

Spartanburg County deputies said they were called to the Li'l Cricket on Garner Road on Thursday about 10 p.m. after the clerk said a man came inside, took the Bud Light from the cooler and came behind the counter. He stole cigarettes and rolls of coins after pushing the clerk when she tried to stop him from stealing the items.

The clerk told deputies he threatened to kill her before pushing her.

Deputies were told the man was seen running into a nearby house, and they were able to find him inside a large hole hiding in the crawl space with the beer.

When deputies demanded he come out, they said he refused so they sent the dog in to remove him, and he hit the dog with a beer can before two deputies were able to get him out of the area.

The suspect, Timothy Thomas, 38, was taken to the hospital for treatment of the dog bites and was charged with strong-arm robbery and cruelty to a police dog.
