Carowinds ride strands people for more than two hours

YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -

A day of fun turned scary for some people at Carowinds.

Twenty-five people got stuck while on board the amusement park's tallest ride Saturday.

Carowinds says the security system activated on the new 300 foot tall WindSeeker ride, which caused the ride to stop at the top of the tower.

A Carowinds spokesman says the riders were stuck at the top of the ride for about 50 minutes, then a maintenance crew was able to manually lower the riders to about 30 feet where they were stuck for almost 2 hours.

The maintenance crew were finally able to lower them safety to the ground.

The Flint Hill fire department from York County, SC stood by with a rescue plan in case they had to pluck people off the tower.

Carowinds says the rides are inspected daily before the park opens. The Windseeker was closed for the rest of Saturday while further maintenance, inspections and test runs were made.

Additional tests were conducted Sunday morning, and the ride re-opened to the public around noon.
