Upstate candidates turn in petitions to get onto ballots

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

More than 70 Upstate candidates turned in petitions Monday to try to get on the November general election ballots.

An unprecedented number of people are trying to get on the ballot as a petition candidate after being booted from primary ballots. A state Supreme Court decision in May on improperly filed paperwork caused about 250 candidates statewide to be removed from the June 12 primaries.

Becoming a petition candidate requires getting signatures from at least 5 percent of a district's registered voters.

Candidates who turned in enough signatures by Monday's noon deadline will be verified throughout the next month by the county election offices. Those certified will be on the November ballots.

For the general elections, the winner takes all unlike primaries when candidates must have 50 percent plus one vote to be declared the winner.
