PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A nationwide drought could soon drain your wallet at the grocery store.
The drought is literally withering away food supplies and driving up the cost of food. Climatologists said most of the country is experiencing the worst drought since the 1950s.
The Upstate is seeing a moderate to extreme drought. Some crops are in short supply, like hay used to feed animals.
Tom Trantham, who owns Happy Cow Creamery, said the cost of food could triple by the end of summer
"It hurts everybody so it will trickle down, not trickle up but trickle down, and it will hurt all of the working people and this will end up being a pretty serious thing we have here," Trantham said.
Trantham said one way to cut food costs is to support local family farms in the area so that you can avoid paying the shipping and packaging fees added into the cost of food and larger grocery stores.
