Police said a homeowner caught a Spartanburg man breaking into his house and stopped him by beating him in the head with a flashlight.
Spartanburg police were called to the Folsom Street home about 5 p.m. Tuesday when the victim said he heard someone banging on his front door while he was in the shower.
Officers said the man got out of the shower and went to look through the peephole about the time the suspect, 47-year-old Terry Miller, broke down the door, falling onto the floor.
The homeowner told police the only thing nearby to was a Maglite flashlight, so he grabbed it and hit Miller several times on the back of the head as he lay on the floor.
The man ordered Miller to leave, and as he ran out, Miller fell through the porch post onto his car, denting it, police said.
About 10 minutes later, police said Miller was found admitting himself to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center with a head injury.
"He got a couple of staples I'm sure but, he's lucky that he didn't get killed. I think some people around here wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a gun or beat his face in. He was lucky that he got to walk away," said the victim's girlfriend during an anonymous interview.
Miller was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary and malicious injury to a home for damaging the porch. He is being held at the county jail on a $50,000 bond.
