A Belton man accused of conning people out of money in Greenville County was arrested after a chase and crash in North Carolina on Thursday.

Investigators said last week that Anthony Carpenter wrote checks worth more than $12,000 from a closed Palmetto Bank account to two businesses as the owner and operator of Superior Meats and Seafood.

Deputies said Carpenter then started conning people online by advertising vehicles for sale on a website. When at least two people attempted to purchase a vehicle from him, detectives said he took their money for a down payment and never turned over the vehicle.

On Thursday, Cherokee County deputies said they were told Carpenter was staying at an RV park in Blacksburg. They said that when they arrived to arrest Carpenter he jumped in a car and headed north on Interstate 85.

Deputies said the chase continued into North Carolina. They said it ended when Carpenter's vehicle crashed near exit 5.

Carpenter was arrested in connection with charges related to the chase and was being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center. It was not immediately clear when Carpenter would be extradited to South Carolina to face the financial-related charges.
