GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers said an elderly woman from Georgia died Friday morning after crashing along Interstate 85.

The Highway Patrol said the accident happened along northbound I-85 near mile marker 42 about 1:45 a.m. Troopers said the 85-year-old was from Hartwell.

The driver ran off the right side of the road and hit a pole, troopers said. She was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital with injuries and later died from those injuries.

Coroner Barry Wright said the woman, Emma Mattingly, ran off the left side of the road near Interstate 185, hit a light post and was trapped.

No one saw the accident happen but another driver saw her car smoking, stopped, tried to help her and called 911 about 1:50 a.m., Wright said.
