GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A child drowned in a pool at a Greenville County home Tuesday afternoon, and the boy's mother has been arrested in connection with his death.
The drowning happened about 3:45 p.m. at a home on Seabury Drive.
Jeff Fowler, of the Greenville County Coroner's Office, said the 3-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital about 5 p.m.
Deputies said the mother was with her three children, who are all under the age of 3, inside their home when at some point the boy got outside and fell into the pool.
"Because of that, her failure to basically maintain watch over the children and also the fact that she did have some quantity of alcoholic beverage in her system, that led to the charge of homicide by neglect," said Master Deputy Laura Campbell.
Investigators first reported that the mother had gone inside for a brief moment, and when she returned, one of the children had fallen into the pool.
Investigators said the mother pulled the child from the water and neighbors performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.
The boy's mother, 36-year-old Marian Stringer, was arrested and charged with homicide by neglect. The arrest warrant states that Stringer had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her.
The coroner has scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday. Stringer will face a circuit court judge to have her bond set.
