Iva police officer cleared of brutality charge

IVA, SC (AP) -

A police officer in the Anderson County town of Iva has been cleared of charged that he assaulted a teen earlier this year.

Prosecutor Chrissy Adams says her office reviewed an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division and will not charge officer Colin Martin.

Martin had been under investigation for a May 30 chase and traffic stop.

Eighteen-year-old Johnny Bombay had admitted he was trying to get away from Martin because Bombay was driving without insurance. But he had said Martin used unnecessary force after he had Bombay stopped and on the ground.

Iva town attorney Mary McCormac says she's pleased with the decision. McCormac says she did not think Martin had done anything wrong.

Martin has worked at the Iva Police Department less than a year.
