SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Southern Conference coaches and the league's media have picked Georgia Southern as the preseason favorite team.

The SoCon football media day was held in Spartanburg on Thursday where members of the media met with team representatives to discuss the upcoming season.

During the event, two polls were released that both had the Eagles at the top. Appalachian State was second in the coaches poll while Wofford was third. The two teams were flipped in the media poll.

Furman was voted fifth and Western Carolina ranked ninth in both polls.

Georgia Southern won the league championship in 2011 (7-1 in the conference), and will return eight offensive starters and seven defensive starters in 2012, including the league's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Brent Russell.

The Mountaineers finished in a tie for second place in the conference standings last season (6-2). Appalachian State made its seventh consecutive appearance in the FCS Playoffs in 2011.

Wofford was slotted third after finishing 2011 with a 6-2 SoCon record. The Terriers have earned a berth in the FCS Playoffs in four of the last five years and return Eric Breitenstein, the 2011 Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Western Carolina is the first SoCon team to kickoff the 2012-2013 season against Mars Hill in Cullowhee, NC, on Aug. 30. The first SoCon conference game pits Furman against Samford in Birmingham on Sept. 1.
