Greenville restaurant owner charged with tax evasion

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Greenville restaurant owner was arrested Thursday and charged with six counts of income tax evasion, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Officials said Macias "Larry" Rodriguez owned and operated several Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant locations in Greenville County from 2005 to 2010. They said that Rodriguez filed false sales tax returns for the restaurants during that period, failing to report more than $4.5 million.

Because of the false reports, Rodriguez failed to pay more than $259,000 in state sales tax, officials said.

Beattie Ashmore, Rodriguez's attorney, said his client has paid back a substantial portion of the money to the Revenue Department. He said he is working with the attorney general's office to determine the correct amount of unpaid taxes.

If convicted, Rodriguez faces up to 30 years in prison and up to $60,000 fines.
