UPDATE: Victim killed in Aiken fire identified

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The Aiken Co. Coroner's Office has been identified the victim as 77 year old Marlene Leich.

ADPS firefighters found Leich's body on a sofa in the living room, and the coroner says she died from carbon monoxide poisoning from smoke inhalation.

Investigators say the fire appears to have started near the kitchen area, and do not suspect arson.

ORIGINAL STORY: A body was found inside an Aiken home after an early morning fire. Aiken Public Safety is on the scene clearing out the home on the 700 block of Brucewood Street in Aiken.

Around 3 a.m. a neighbor saw smoke coming from the window. He immediately called 911.

"Me and my son, and my son-in-law tried to break in the door, but the heat was too high," said Lesley Dowling, who live directly across the street.

Neighbors were shocked to see the clutter firefighters had to clear out of the house; piling it in the front yard. They say it reminds them of the television show "Hoarders."

Corporal Jeremy Hembree says firefighters were blocked by piles of belongings when they entered they home. They had to cut into the side of the home just to get to the fire.

"When you have a large amount of stuff in the house just sitting everywhere, it hampers our ability to perform our functions and firefight," said Corporal Hembree.

Once inside the home, investigators discovered the body of a woman. Crews are still on the scene cleaning up and trying to figure out what happened.

The woman's name has not been released. Neighbors say she's an elderly woman who was very friendly and loved animals.
