GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The grandmother and the father of a child who died in 2008 were convicted Friday of their roles in the boy's death.

Prosecutors said 55-year-old Donna Phillips, of Pickens, was found guilty of homicide by child abuse or neglect. They said 28-year-old Jamie Morris, of Pickens, was found guilty of aiding and abetting homicide by child abuse or neglect.

Evidence presented at the trial showed that in March 2008, both Phillips and Morris gave a lethal dose of cough medicine to 21-month-old Jaidon Morris, prosecutors said. They said both people failed to get the child care after he showed signs of an overdose.

The medicine contained hydrocodone, a painkiller and chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine, prosecutors said.

Phillips was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She was also sentenced to six months in prison for two counts of contempt of court.

Morris was sentenced to eight years in prison and two years of probation.

Both Phillips and Morris must serve 85 percent of their sentences before being eligible for parole.
