GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said a woman was badly beaten near City Hall in downtown Greenville by a homeless man.

Greenville police said they are investigating the attack that happened about 12:30 a.m. Sunday when an officer saw the man attack a woman with some type of pole or stick near W. Court and Laurens streets.

Before the woman lost consciousness, officers said she told them who the man was, that he was homeless, and he attacked her after she tried to get away from him and he was mad.

Police said the woman's leg was severely broken and had an open wound on her ankle, but they said it could have been much worse.

"The incident is titled attempted murder because it is our belief that it was this person's intent to kill the victim," said Lt. Jason Rampey with the Greenville City Police.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and no arrests have yet been made in the case, police said.
