GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

From pencils to paper, from blouses to bow ties, it's the weekend for which parents shopping for school supplies in the Carolinas have been waiting.

From Friday to Sunday, shoppers can buy hundreds of items designated as school supplies tax free. In South Carolina, the holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday until midnight Sunday. In North Carolina, the holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue said that residents save about $3 million each tax-free weekend.

Some of the items on the list include clothing, shoes, book bags, computers, printers, bedspreads and linens. Some of the items not on the list are jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture and items placed on layaway.

The sales tax holiday has become the third busiest shopping period of the year in South Carolina, surpassed by the weekend after Thanksgiving and the weekend before Christmas.

Georgia has a similar sales tax holiday on Aug. 10 and 11.
