BOILING SPRINGS, NC (AP) -

A woman has been charged with 55 counts of animal cruelty after authorities investigated conditions at a home near Boiling Springs.

Sixty-two-year-old Carolyn Kirby has been charged by Cleveland County Animal Control with the misdemeanors.

Officers took 29 cats, 17 dogs and three rabbits from the home.

Animal control supervisor Tripp Bowling says the 49 animals will be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Authorities say Kirby kept all of the cats in various cages and crates inside two buildings on the property.

Marguerite Mebane with the Cleveland County Humane Society says Kirby lives in Rutherford County and visited the home for feeding and cleaning.

It was not clear if Kirby has an attorney.
