A Mauldin man was killed in a crash on Interstate 85 in Greenville on Tuesday evening after walking away from his mother's car, the coroner said.
The crash happened just before 7 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway near the Mauldin Road exit.
According to Greenville County Chief Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis, the pedestrian was hit by a tractor-trailer that was hauling cars.
Ellis said the victim, 20-year-old David Barwick, was riding with his mother in her pickup truck when they heard a loud noise and pulled over. He said they both got out to check for a possible flat tire.
When Barwick's mother went to get back in the truck, he refused and began walking along the interstate, Ellis said.
Barwick's mother said she tried to follow him but then went back to the truck, according to Ellis.
Barwick was then hit by the tractor-trailer. Ellis said he died from blunt force trauma to the head and body.
Lt. Tim Ridgeway, of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, said investigators were trying to determine if the pedestrian intentionally ran into traffic.
Ridgeway said two lanes of the three-lane interstate were blocked. The lanes reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
Ellis said the Highway Patrol, coroner's office and deputies are still investigating Barwick's manner of death.
