GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said a Greer man was charged with attempted murder after he tried to stab his brother and a woman over a fight about groceries.

Greer police said they were called to a home on 10th Street about 7:15 p.m. Monday after neighbors said Alan Starnes, 57, tried to kill his brother.

When officers arrived, they found Starnes' elderly mother covered in mud, and Starnes struggling with his brother in the backyard.

According to the police report, Starnes was upset when his brother was eating food he claimed was his and would not give him the food stamp card to go to the store.

Starnes left and returned to the home a short time later saying he was going to kill his brother and another woman who was at the home, according to the report.

Police said Starnes went after his brother with a knife, but the woman blocked him, prompting Starnes to cut her shirt.

Starnes put the knife away then got into a fistfight with his brother, police said. The report said he also shoved his mother, who is in her 90s, causing her to fall into the mud.

When officers took Starnes into custody, he told them, "good luck charging me, they won't testify against me, so it's all going to be dropped."

Police said while searching the home, they found drug paraphernalia inside that both brothers claimed to belong to the other one.

Starnes was charged with two counts of attempted murder and was being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center. Starnes' brother, Wendell Starnes, was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
