SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said an elderly couple was exploited by an Inman man who became their power of attorney, then stole $20,000 from them.

Spartanburg County deputies said Scott Staggs, 52, told the 82-year-old victim that he stole the cash from her lock box in 2011.

The report said Staggs helped out the woman's husband and that is how he got access to the safety box, stealing the money in July.

The report also said the woman had $40,000 stolen from another home she owns in Landrum in October 2011.

According to the arrest warrants, Staggs convinced her husband to appoint him as his power of attorney in August 2011, then began the financial abuse.

Staggs was arrested Thursday and charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult and grand larceny greater than $10,000.
