GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was fired Thursday because he may be involved in criminal activity, said Sheriff Steve Mueller in a release.

Mueller said his office was told by the Gaffney Police Department that the employee was under investigation and that the State Law Enforcement Division was involved in the investigation.

The sheriff said he was briefed by SLED about the allegations, and because of their seriousness, the employee was fired.

Mueller said he cannot reveal the allegations because it could jeopardize the investigation that is under way.

The employee, who was not identified in the release, had been with the sheriff's office for 15 years, Mueller said.
