GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

With Upstate students returning to schools during the next few weeks, some children will be heading to class on an empty stomach.

FOX Carolina and The Salvation Army do not want that to happen. A back-to-school food drive will be held Friday at the Walmart on Woodruff Road in Greenville to help restock the Salvation Army's food kitchen shelves.

From 5 a.m. until noon, FOX Carolina crews and officials with the Salvation Army will be collecting canned and non-perishable food donations. Suggested items include pasta, boxed dinners, instant milk, peanut butter, rice, sugar, cereal and flour.

The first 200 people who donate will get a voucher for a free sausage biscuit from Bojangles.

Those dropping off donations will get the chance to meet some members of the FOX Carolina News team and will make sure local families have what they need for the start of school.

The donations will be distributed throughout the Upstate. According to The Salvation Army, 105,172 children in Greenville County live in poverty.

A recent study revealed that 40 percent of teachers say children coming to school hungry because they have not had enough to eat at home is a serious problem at their school.

The Salvation Army food pantry accepts donations of perishable and non-perishable food items that will help supply food for their dining hall, social services department and distribute groceries to individuals.
