SPARTANBURG, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

The proposal to open a temporary ice rink in downtown Spartanburg this winter was unanimously approved during the city council's meeting Monday night.

The proposed rink will be located in Morgan Square and would be provided by an unnamed sponsor. The city would provide the staff for the operation.

Councilwoman Linda Dogan said while there are still some logistics to work out, city officials are excited about the new rink and are hopeful the added attraction will drive more people downtown.

City communications manager Will Rothschild said an ice rink would help revitalize the downtown area. Rothschild said ice rinks have helped in Greenville, as well as Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina.

The rink should open Nov. 15 and close in early January. It will cost $10 per person to skate, which includes the price of renting skates.
