COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -
The man Department of Public Safety officials say led Highway Patrol troopers on a chase on Interstate 20 that ended with a shootout at a Five Points bank has been identified.
DPS says arrest warrants have been filed against 41-year-old Scott Parker Hanson of Elgin that charge him with speeding and failure to stop for a blue light.
Additional charges from the State Law Enforcement Division may be forthcoming against Hanson.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the incident began around 8:15 a.m. near Interstate 20 and Highway 277.
DPS spokesperson Sherry Iacobelli said a trooper stopped a vehicle that passed him traveling at a high rate of speed on I-20. When the trooper approached the vehicle and began talking with the suspect, he observed signs that Hanson appeared to be under the influence, Iacobelli said.
Hanson, according to Iacobelli, fled the scene and the trooper began a pursuit. During the chase, another trooper joined in on Forest Drive and all three eventually stopped in the Wells Fargo parking lot on Saluda Avenue near Blossom Street.
Iacobelli said Hanson began shooting at the troopers when he exited his vehicle. Both officers returned fire, and Hanson was injured. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Elmore Stroman was nearby unloading flowers at Blossom Shop Florist when he heard the shots.
"First I ran back inside, then my boss came outside and said, 'What's all that shooting?' I said, 'There it is right there.' All I could see was the guy. Pop, pop, pop, backing up and shooting. A lot of us haven't gotten over it," Elmore said. "It happened so fast."
As for the two troopers, per standard operating procedure, both of them have been placed on administrative duties.
