KINARDS, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said they are searching for a man who robbed a Laurens County store at gunpoint Wednesday morning.
The robbery happened about 10 a.m. at the Shady Grove Service Center located at 3455 Whitmire Hwy. in Kinards.
Deputies said a white male with medium build wearing a gray shirt, tan shorts, brown work boots and a black ball cap went into the service center, showed a pistol in the owners face, demanded money and fled on foot.
The store's owner told FOX Carolina that the man came into the store pretending to be a customer, but then pulled out a gun and threatened to kill him if he did not sit with his hands behind his head. He took his cell phone and wallet before fleeing, the owner said.
A neighbor who lives across the street from the service station said crime in the community is on the rise.
"Criminals know it takes cops about 45 minutes to get all the way out here, and you're about one minute from the interstate," said neighbor Dan Jackson. "There are about seven ways to get out of here."
Jackson said more police presence would help cut crime in the area.
"Every now and then someone will complain and the highway patrol will park their car right here for four hours, and nothing happens during that time," said Jackson.
The Laurens County Sheriff's Office and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the robbery.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Deputies said the man is considered armed and dangerous.
