GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Thousands of South Carolinians spent hours this week in line trying to figure out why they didn't get their unemployment benefits.

A new policy went into effect this week, and FOX Carolina has learned 16,000 people did not meet the new requirement.  Right now, state law requires you to look for jobs four times a week, but the new policy requires you to use the South Carolina Works Online Service website at least once a week to search for a job.

South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce officials tell FOX Carolina the decision was made back in January to make the change.  They tell us they have done several things like sending out mailers, posting information on their website and auto phone calls to alert people about the change.
