HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
Two burglars were scared off by an 87-year-old woman armed with a 9 mm handgun Thursday morning, deputies said.
The woman called 911 after seeing two men break into her Highland Lake community home and said she scared them off when she got out her gun, Henderson County deputies said.
The woman told the 911 dispatcher that she didn't see anything but heard one person leave.
The dispatcher asked the woman to call 911 again if anything else happened, who replied, "No I'm going to shoot them, well you know, I will stay armed until the police get here."
The dispatcher told the woman to secure her gun before officers arrived, which she agreed to do.
Deputies said responding officers found one of the suspects lying near the woods, and the other suspect was located and charged later in the day.
Twenty-four-year-old Christopher Lewis, who is a registered sex offender, and Lance Staton, 24, were both charged with first-degree burglary and remain in custody at the Henderson County detention facility under $60,000 bond.
Deputies said Lewis and Staton were linked to more than four other burglaries and 15 breaking-and-entering larcenies throughout the county.
Deputies have found property in the Highland Lake, Crook Creek, Lake Summit, Lake Osceola, and Stoney Mountain Road areas. Their investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected.
The men targeted laptop computers, flat screen TVs, iPads, iPods, electronic tablets, cash and jewelry, deputies said.
If anyone near these areas has had a theft occur that has not been reported please contact the Henderson County Sheriff's Office at 828-697-4911.
