CANTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -
A Canton man was charged with murder Friday in connection with the death of his son Thursday night.
Haywood County Sheriff Bobby Suttles said deputies were called to 78 Chipperwood Park about 8 p.m. Thursday.
Suttles said the 4-year-old boy was airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he was pronounced dead.
The boy's father, 24-year-old Michael Swayngim, was originally charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and released on $15,000 bond, Suttles said. He said Swayngim was arrested again later and charged with child abuse in connection with the boy's death.
On Friday, Swayngim was also charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case, Suttles said. He said Swayngim was being held in the county jail on $290,000 bond.
