SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A family of three was rescued Sunday after spending the night in the wild in Oconee County after a Chatooga River rafting trip took longer than expected.

Oconee County rescuers said the family went rafting Saturday along the Chatooga River, but when the trip took too long and it got dark, they got out of the river and waited for help.

Help arrived about 2 p.m. Sunday. Rescuers found the family about a mile north of the Earl's Ford Area after they found shelter near the river.

Rescuers said the family was physically unharmed but were cold, wet and hungry.

Officials said the family did the right thing by not continuing in the dark.
