GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials said a child wandered away from school on the first day of class Monday.

Greenwood School District 50 officials said the 4-year-old left the Early Childhood Center about 11 a.m. They said the child was found safe by police at a local gas station near the school.

Officials said they have begun a review of the circumstances surrounding the situation.

"This is a very unsettling situation for the district, and we are very concerned and frustrated that this happened on the opening day of school," said Rex Coates, director of ECC.

Officials said the safety of students is of the utmost concern.
