Robert Spearman (Spartanburg Co. Detention Center)
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A man was arrested after deputies said he punched a deputy in the chest then took a deputy's Taser before being subdued in the sheriff's office parking lot on Monday.
Spartanburg County deputies said Robert Spearman, 50, had been picked up by his girlfriend when they got into a fight about him drinking in the car, so he asked her to drop him off at the sheriff's office.
When she pulled up in the parking lot and he got out, Spearman jumped on top of the hood of her SUV so she couldn't leave, according to the sheriff's office report.
The report said that's when two deputies came out to see what was going on and ordered Spearman off the car. When he got off, deputies said he broke front windguard.
Spearman cursed at deputies, came at them and punched a deputy in the chest when they tried to arrest him, the report said. It said as deputies tried to restrain him, Spearman hit the deputy several times.
One deputy shot a Taser at Spearman, but it did not take him down and a struggle ensued, with Spearman taking the Taser, according to the report.
Spearman then drive-stunned one of the deputy's with the Taser, but they were able to eventually get it away from him, the report said.
At one point, Spearman threatened to kill deputies, the report said. After multiple attempts, the report said deputies eventually stunned Spearman with the Taser and arrested him. Additionally, they said they found a knife on him.
Spearman was charged with resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, three counts of threatening a public official, resisting arrest with assault, malicious injury to personal property and public disorderly conduct. He is being held at the county jail on a $25,000 bond.
