CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) -

Officials in Mecklenburg County said the local magistrates will have to forgo the romantic side of their job during the week of the Democratic National Convention.

The Charlotte Observer reports that magistrates won't be able to conduct marriage ceremonies at the courthouse or the magistrate's office adjacent to the jail. That's because additional magistrates are being assigned to the jail to help deal with an anticipated spike in arrests during the convention.

People will still be able to get marriage licenses from the county's Register of Deeds office from Sept. 4-7.

Those couples intent on tying the knot in Mecklenburg County during convention week are advised to use magistrates in other cities or make arrangements with a minister, pastor, rabbi or others legally authorized to perform a marriage.
