GREENVILLE, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has confirmed what a newspaper in Argentina first reported, that he is engaged to the woman he had an extramarital affair with.

The Clarín newspaper said that former Gov. Mark Sanford and Maria Belen Chapur got engaged on Wednesday. The article said Sanford surprised Chapur with a ring as they ate lunch at an Italian restaurant in Buenos Aires.

When reached by The Associated Press on Sunday, Sanford confirmed the accuracy of a statement provided to CNN that announced his engagement to Chapur. He declined further comment.

The relationship between the two goes back to 2009. The governor then claimed he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but later admitted in a news conference that he had traveled to Argentina to visit Chapur, who he later called his soul mate.

The long-term affair led to the governor's divorce from his wife Jennifer Sullivan Sanford in 2010.
