Greenville police say this man stole dozens of laptops from businesses along Broad Street. (Greenville Police Dept.)
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Greenville police said $75,000 worth of property was stolen from several businesses along Broad Street in the past few days.
Police said the first of the rash of burglaries happened at a business on East Broad Street late last week. They said the most recent break-ins happened at several businesses in the Main and Broad building along West Broad Street.
Investigators said that more than 30 laptops were among the items stolen from the offices.
Terry Stringer owns Main Street Webworx, which is one of the few businesses that did not get hit. He thinks it's because of his entry doors, which are glass and lock electronically from the top.
"Apparently the criminal used a large crowbar to get into all these doors, a crowbar doesn't work on our door, so, we were spared," Stringer said.
Those just down the hall from Webworx were not so lucky. The door and lock for Rick Erwin's Dining Group were clearly tampered with.
Sgt. Jason Rampey, with the Greenville police, said the surveillance photos show the man walking through a secured area, where he should not have been. The man is dragging rolling luggage, which could easily store stolen computers and not raise suspicion as he left through the adjoining Marriott Hotel.
Rampey said police have seen people stealing electronics to sell online or in parking lots, but not like this.
"Not on this scale. Not this number, not this many businesses... in this short amount of time," said Rampey.
Police asked anyone who has information about the burglaries or has recently been approached to buy laptops to call Greenville County Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME (864-232-7463).
