A boater who refused to evacuate and tried to ride out Isaac on his boat on Biloxi Bay needed rescuing Wednesday.
The owner of the 30-35 foot pleasure boat had tied up at the pier under the I-110 bridge. Officers urged the man to leave the boat, but he refused.
Around 8 p.m. he called 911 for help.
The driving rain, wind and waves sent the boat crashing into the pilings.
When rescuers arrived the boat was quickly sinking and the piers were damaged from the storm, making a rescue extremely hazardous. D'Iberville police officers assigned to the marine division, with the support of the D'Iberville Fire Department, braved chest deep water in heavy rain and wind to reach the victim and bring him to safety.
Chief Payne said, "This is a perfect example of the reasons we put out evacuation notices. This individual failed to comply with the evacuation order and it could have cost him his life or the life of one of the rescuers."
