PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -
One person was killed in a crash near Pelzer on Thursday evening.
The three-vehicle crash happened at 5:18 p.m. near the intersection of Cooley Bridge Road and U.S. Highway 25.
Troopers said that a vehicle driven by 47-year-old Randy Evans, of Starr, and a second vehicle were traveling north on Cooley Bridge Road. They said an oncoming car crossed the centerline and hit Evans' vehicle head-on, which caught fire. They said the third vehicle swerved to miss the crash, ran off the road and hit a ditch.
Evans was pronounced dead at the scene.
"(I) rolled my window down just to hear what was going on, and I heard the tires popping," said Joellyn Hayden, a witness. "At first, I thought it was just a grass fire on the side of the road, (but) then I realized it was a car accident. I pulled over to take a look and called 911."
Troopers said the crash is under investigation by their accident reconstruction team.
