ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Investigators said a woman is lucky to be alive after driving her car into Lake Hartwell.

Troopers said the woman was driving along Chasewater Drive in Anderson County on Saturday, and drove between two houses and into the water at the bottom of a hilly area.

Troy Hensarling said he was inside his home when he saw the car race through his backyard and into the lake with a splash.

"I ran down there but by the time I got there she was underwater and I didn't take anything to break the window," Hensarling said, detailing his efforts to try and save the woman. "Thank goodness three guys in a boat came around the corner and I waved them over. They got the anchor out of the boat and helped me break the window and pull her out."

Officials said the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

We're told crews searched the surrounding water for several hours after the crash because a child's car-seat was strapped into the back-seat of the car.

No other victims were identified.
