INMAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Inman woman is charged with murder after deputies said she shot and killed her live-in boyfriend.

Spartanburg County deputies said they found Steven McDowell, 38, lying on the floor of the Rushmore Drive home he shared with 39-year-old Sharon Miller, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators haven't released a motive as to why they say Miller shot her boyfriend.

According to the incident report, Miller called 911 and said her boyfriend shot himself in the chest, but deputies said she told dispatch her boyfriend had shot himself.

Deputies said during the course of their investigation, they determined it was a domestic homicide incident rather than a suicide.

McDowell's family members gathered at the residence Monday evening, but they did not wish to comment on the incident.

One neighbor told FOX Carolina off camera he had witnessed the couple arguing frequently in the past.

According to the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office, McDowell was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Hospital at 11 a.m.

Miller was denied bond and is being held at the county detention center.

McDowell had previously been charged with murder in connection with the death of Michael Smith, 34, who was found in a burned SUV on East Suber Road on Nov. 15, 2001.

McDowell was arrested in April of 2010 and his case ended in a mistrial in 2011, but the solicitor's office said they planned to try the case again.

Deputies said McDowell was on home detention as part of his bond following his 2010 arrest pending the outcome of another trial.
