EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Easley mother and her 15-year-old son were laid to rest Monday, a few days after deputies said they were killed by the woman's husband before he killed himself.

Pickens County deputies said 42-year-old Sandy Smith and her son Daniel Smith were shot to death by 61-year-old William Thomas on Thursday night at their Saluda Dam Road home in Easley.

Hundreds gathered at Marathon Church in Powdersville on Monday for the Smiths' funeral.

Family members invited FOX Carolina to the funeral to get the word out about domestic violence. Investigators said Thomas shot the Smiths as the result of an ongoing domestic dispute.

Clayton Smith, Sandy Smith's brother, said his sister's 10-year marriage had been riddled with abuse. He said it is too late to save his sister but he wants to let others know about the dangers of domestic violence.

"Your family is not the enemy," said Clayton Smith. "But when violence is part of your life and you add the fuel, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure - this is the end result."

During the funeral, speakers praised Sandy Smith for being a good, loving mother and praised Daniel Smith as an athletic, caring student.

Daniel Smith was a freshman at Easley High School. He was on the JV football team and wrestling team. His football teammates honored him Monday by wearing jerseys and carrying the caskets out of the church.

"We will all miss that smile, he had that smile that you just couldn't imitate," said Jamie Hammett, Daniel Smith's youth pastor. "He just had that smile."

The Smiths were laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery following the church ceremony.
