DUNCAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Police arrested a Spartanburg man after they said he crashed into a tractor trailer hauling cars, seriously injuring his pregnant girlfriend and her 3-year-old daughter.
Capt. C.E. Long with the Duncan Police Department said Brandon Hull, 24, was driving along Highway 290 about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday when he flew into the hauler, never hitting the brakes.
Long said Hull's pregnant girlfriend was sitting in the passenger seat. Officers found marijuana in the car and Long said Hull admitted to smoking it.
Witnesses found the woman's daughter in the backseat not in her child safety seat, though doctors said she did have marks consistent with wearing a seatbelt during a crash, according to Long.
Long said the girl was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital along with her mother. He said neither adult was wearing a seatbelt.
Traffic was snarled along Highway 290 for nearly two hours.
Hull was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana, felony driving under the influence involving great injury, child endangerment, having an uninsured vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the county jail awaiting a bond hearing.
Hull was also charged with not having a child restraint because of witnesses who said they found the girl lying on the floorboard behind the driver's seat, according to Long.
There is no word on the girl or her mother's condition. Long said more charges could be filed if something happens to the baby.
