HONEA PATH, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Honea Path police and the Anderson County coroner were called to a home on Eastview Street Thursday afternoon after family members discovered an elderly couple had been killed.

Coroner Greg Shore said Robert Beasley Jr, 81, shot his wife Bertha Beasley, 80, sometime late Wednesday night or Thursday morning, but the couple was not found until about 2 p.m. Thursday.

On Wednesday, some family members stopped by to see the family and said Robert Beasley was depressed about his health problems and age, Shore said.

Shore said when family tried calling on Thursday to check on them, no one answered the phone. He said when they arrived, the front door was unlocked and they found the couple in their bed.

There was no history of domestic violence or abuse, Shore said.

He said they were a very loving couple and thinks that Robert Beasley wanted to protect his wife from failing health and did not want to leave her without someone to take care of her.

FOX Carolina crews at the scene said family was very distraught and the police chief did not want to speak about the shooting, "out of respect for the family."

Family said the couple were members at First Baptist Church in Honea Path; they were Christians, and deeply in love.
