Clouds last night helped keep temperatures warmer than forecasted! And then clouds stuck around longer than expected today, which lead to a cooler day area-wide.
The reason the clouds are hanging around is two fold... we have an east/northeast wind which is bringing in some moisture and cool air. There is an inversion (sinking air aloft) caused by a ridge of high pressure. The inversion helps to trap those clouds at the surface. Now that we have a better handle on this set-up, we can better forecast for tonight and tomorrow.
Therefore, we are expecting mostly cloudy skies tonight and temps in the low 60s in the Upstate (instead of mid 50s). Tomorrow we'll notice the clouds SLOWLY breaking up, which should keep us from heating above 80 degrees. In the mountains we'll cool into the mid 50s tonight, then low 70s tomorrow (not too shabby!!!).
Clouds are a funny thing at night... they act like a blanket and help to hold in heat overnight. It's funny because you probably think clouds, you think cooler weather! But that's only the case during the day.
Regardless, it's been feeling great outside! No rain expected until late weekend as a system approached from the northwest.
