UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Several people in Union County hit the pavement Saturday morning, calling for an end to gang violence in the area.
The small crowd chanted prayers and held up homemade signs advocating stomping out violence in the area.
They marched from the former Sims Middle School and ended at the steps of the Union County Courthouse, hoping their message might spread in the neighborhoods they passed through.
Sheriff David Taylor said gangs are a growing problem in the county, and he's glad to see the community taking a stand against it.
Participants in the march said gangs are behind many crimes in the county, including home invasions, rapes and even murder.
Participants said they also marched to show support for the victims of those crimes, including DeQuan Jones.
Taylor said the 17-year-old was shot and killed during a gang-related dispute in August.
