GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville County Coroner Barry Wright said a Greer man drowned in Lake Robinson Sunday evening.

Wright said the man was fishing on a boat with his daughter-in-law and three grandchildren on the lake near Shore Vista Lane in Greer, when his 4-year-old grandchild fell off the boat.

Wright said the man jumped off the boat to save her but struggled to help the child. Wright said the daughter-in-law was able to pull the child to safety but the man drowned in the process.

The victim was identified as 61-year-old Ronald "Rock" White.

FOX Carolina spoke with White's wife, SuChuan White, on Monday, who said his death is a tragedy she still can't believe is true.

She said her husband "Rock" had been her "rock" when she lost her father earlier this year.

"Last year I lost father, and he come to me and said, 'It's OK, you still have me,'" said SuChuan White.

She said those are the memories she will cherish in her heart of her beloved husband, knowing he died trying to save his granddaughter.

"He sacrificed himself to save his granddaughter's life, that's him, that's my rock," said Suchuan White.

Authorities are still investigating the drowning and said the girl was not wearing a life vest.
