GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Greenville man pleaded guilty to shooting his girlfriend and seriously wounding her in 2011.

Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins said 44-year-old Michael Stephens pleaded guilty in court Sept. 12 to attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Stephens was sentenced to 15 years in prison on the two charges.

Wilkins said Stephens got into a heated argument with his live-in girlfriend Jan. 22, 2011 when he snapped, shooting her once and knocked her to the ground.

The fight happened at the North Franklin Road apartment complex. Witnesses said Stephens fired four to five more times while his girlfriend was on the ground.

She suffered a fractured skull, hip and pelvis in the fight, Wilkins said.

Deputies took Stephens into custody immediately and he told them he shot her after he "just snapped."

Stephens will have to serve 85 percent of his time before he is eligible for parole.
